• Pilot sand nourishment Ameland Inlet - Kustgenese 2.0

  • Dredging and beach nourishment

Van den Herik has managed and executed the nourishment of 5 million situ cubic metres of sand at The Ameland Inlet, as part of a major pilot project of the Dutch Water Board (Rijkswaterstaat).

In the Amelander Inlet between two islands in The Wadden sea, Van den Herik has managed and executed the nourishment of 5 million situ cubic metres of sand on an outer delta of the Ameland island as well as the (morphological) monitoring.

    Kustgenese 2.0

The pilot was part of a coastal program called ‘Kustgenese 2.0’ in which the national Water Board investigates how to defend the sandy Dutch coastline against the rising sea level, in a sustainable way.

The focus was to get insights in the behaviour of sand, water replacement and the ecological condition of the area around the inlet. The area will be monitored in the years to follow.

More in particular it is essential to gather information about the amounts of sand needed for the Wadden sea and the amount of erosion of the outer delta of a Wadden island.

The nourishment process took 9 months.
