The harbor basin in Rotterdam’s Keilehaven will be transformed into a tidal park. With the construction of the tidal park, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rotterdam and De Vries Werkendam B.V., we are giving a boost to nature and recreation in the Keilehaven.
Where there used to be an industrial harbor, tidal pools and tidal terraces are now being constructed. This project is part of the greening of the banks of the Nieuwe Maas and Nieuwe Waterweg rivers.

In the harbor, the fresh river water experiences influence from the sea, so the water is regularly highly brackish. The new design of the harbor creates shallows and levees. The effect of the ebb and flow will attract special plants, fish and birds that live on the border between fresh and salt water. The new nature also offers Rotterdammers the chance to walk and picnic in a special area.

“The harbor basin was partly filled with 10 thousand cubic meters of sand brought in by water, so we didn’t have to drive hundreds of trucks through the city.“
